Photo 1Our Group Explore Saint Cuthbert’s Churchyard
On Wednesday 25th June 2025 our group members visited Saint Cuthbert’s Church in Marton. We were given a guided tour of both the Churchyard and the Grade 2 listed Church by members of the church and volunteers. The grave of Henry William Ferdinand Bolckow (8 Dec 1806 – 18 Jun 1878), one of the founders of modern Middlesbrough, is found in the graveyard. He was Middlesbrough’s first MP and also Mayor of Middlesbrough. There is also the grave of his lifelong partner John Vaughan. Together they ran an iron making business that became the Bolckow Vaughan company.Inside the Church we were able to see examples of other famous local people – the baptismal record of 3rd Nov 1728 for Captain James Cook R.N., F.R.S. circumnavigator. There is also a stained-glass window commemorating him and other stained glass windows showing Saints and the Crucifixion. The vicar stalls made of oak bear the work of Robert "Mouseman" Thompson of Kilburn in the form of his trademark of a carved mouse. Impressive stone carving was apparent throughout the church. For more info Click on Saint Cuthbert’s Church Photograph taken by Sheila Nicholson Copyright © 2025 Normanby Local History Group All Rights Reserved
