Ian Stubbs, Local Historian, gave a talk to our group meeting in May 2024 on Linthorpe Cemetery. We were then kindly invited to have a guided walk of the Cemetery on 26th June.

The Cemetery is one of Middlesbrough’s oldest graveyards. It was originally a Quaker burial ground dating from 1668. The new cemetery opened in 1869. It contains the graves of notable Middlesbrough townspeople of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as well as other inhabitants of the town.

On a beautiful sunny day Ian acted as our guide, locating interesting graves for us. He then gave, at each, a very knowledgeable talk about the person buried there. We also found out information about the gravestones themselves – their material and reasoning behind any symbolism. We were able to visit the War Memorial and military graves.

The Cemetery also contains a nature reserve – the whole making a peaceful setting with mature trees, wildflowers and wildlife.

After the guided walk we were invited by the Friends of the Cemetery  to visit the Hebrew Prayer House for refreshments. One of their members helped to locate the site of our History Group members’ family graves via a database.
