One of our village’s long-term residents, Kenny Surtees, sadly passed away on 29th December 2023 aged 74.
Kenny was well known locally as the propietor of the card shop Jubilees on our High Street.   Over many years Kenny has sold many of our group’s books and calendars in Jubilees without profiting himself - many thanks Kenny!

Many flowers and messages were affixed to the Jubilees shop-front including:

"SURTEES KENNETH (KENNY)
Passed away peacefully in hospital on 29th December 2023, Kenny aged 74 years.   Beloved son of the late Kenneth and Margaret.   A loving brother of Eric and Pam.   A much loved and respected brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle and a good friend to many.    Funeral service to be held on Tuesday 16th January in St.Hilda’s Chapel, Teesside Crematorium at 11:15am.   Rose Funerals."
"I will treasure the many conversations we had together at the start of the the day. You will be deeply missed throughout the community. Rest in Peace my good friend,
Cllr. Paul McInnes (owner of PC Tech Computers)."

Kenny was not only a shop proprietor but also a poet.   A few years ago he kindly gave permission for our group to publish one of his poems on our website "The Folk and Places in Normanby, Middlesbrough"  that was previously published in the Evening Gazette.   Many of his friends and places in Normanby are mentioned in this poem!

Kenny was much respected in the community as evident by the huge turnout at Normanby
to see his funeral cortege pause at his shop Jubilees.
People were lining the pavements both sides of our High Street to pay their respects.
Kenny will be very sadly missed.
